BBC:Earth-The Power Of The Planet

The epic story of planet Earth is told in a new, landmark series for BBC Two. Using spectacular images, illuminating science content and compelling narration, the series reveals how each one of the great forces, including volcanoes, ice, the ocean and the atmosphere, have played a critical and central role in the development of Earth since its birth 4.6 billion years ago.

Highlighting the major events that have shaped the Earth's history and allowed life to flourish, presenter Dr Iain Stewart (Journeys From The Centre Of The Earth and Journeys Into The Ring Of Fire) visits some of the most remote places on the planet. The series follows him as he abseils into a lava lake in Ethiopia and cave dives in the underwater caverns left by the meteorite that wiped out the dinosaurs.

Volcano. Episode 1
Dr. Iain Stewart reveals the role natural forces have played in the creation of the planet Earth. The first episode discusses volcanoes. Although they appear to be destructive, volcanoes have been crucial to the development of life on this planet. Iain's journey takes him to Ethiopia to discover lava lakes, to Iceland to scuba dive between continents and to New Zealand to sample some hot springs. But its not just a big holiday for Dr. Stewart: he has a serious point to make.

Atmosphere. Episode 2
Dr. Iain Stewart reveals the crucial natural forces that have shaped the earth's development. A flight in a jet plane, a trip to the Andes and a trip to Shark Bay in Australia may seem expensive: but they're all necessary for Iain to discuss atmosphere. Without atmosphere, we couldn't live: we are, in his own words, but lobsters scuttling around in an ocean of air. Iain traces the history of the atmosphere: from the ozone layer's first creation to its current destruction.

Ice. Episode 3
Few of us can resist the beauty of snow and ice - and yet this is a substance that is strikingly ethemeral. For most of the Earth's history there has been virtually no ice on the planet at all. We live in a time of ice. And ice has some extraordinary powers that make it one of the most powerful forces on Earth.
The message of this film is that when the ice changes the effects are much greater than just the obvious changes in ice cover. The times when ice has taken over have seen some of the most dramatic changes in the Earth’s history. They have driven evolution, including our own evolution.

Oceans. Episode 4
The oceans are almost as ancient as the planet itself - when you look out over the sea you are looking at a view that is unchanged for billions of years. Yet oceans are also the planet's great unknown - their greatest depths have been visited less times than the surface of the moon.
For the Earth, the oceans are its great stabilising influence. They moderate the climate, distribute heat around the planet, and absorb dangerous chemicals. But push the oceans too far, and the results can be catastrophic. The greatest disaster for life on Earth happened when the oceans rebelled, and ended up killing 95% of all life on the planet.

Episode 5 - The Rare Earth
Since life first inhabited the Earth 4 billion years ago it has led a charmed existence. But every now and then something has happened to threaten the existence of life itself – a shock so great that it almost destroyed the Earth’s metabolism.
New imaging technology reveals the “scar tissue” of former disasters, like the great meteorite strike that helped destroy the dinosaurs. This huge crater off the coast of Mexico is only visible using magnetic anomaly imaging. But the impact has left its mark in other ways – Iain dives in spectacular flooded caverns called cenotes that are a legacy of that long ago disaster.
