National Geographic Situation Critical: Moscow Theatre Siege

October 23, 2002. In the centre of Moscow, just a few miles from the Kremlin, over 50 Chechen terrorists storm the Dubrovka Theatre, home to Russia's first Broadway-style musical ""Nord-Ost"" and take all of the 900-strong audience hostage. Led by the notorious rebel Movsar Barayev, the terrorists rig the theatre with explosives as the audience is surrounded by female suicide bombers known as the ""black widows"".
